Personally, I prefer PvE. I've always preferred coop games where me and a few friends could get together and be the heroes of the world so to speak. We've played other RPGs like dungeon siege and used the multiplayer function as well as our imaginations to create a story and enjoy an adventure that would hold our interests for periods of time. Unfortunately there hasnt been many games that support coop functionality until MMO's came along. MMO's themselves have their own problems of too many people around "farming" the same quest spot over and over so that it takes an hour what should take 2 minutes. I prefer the way GW handles gameplay in general. I can have a guild of like minded people whom I can play with when its convenient or we can go about doing our own things and just bring some fairly decent (not perfect by any measure) ai controlled party members with to enjoy the virtual worlds around us and follow our own story lines if we choose. This allows for a social aspect while playing solo that really appeals to me. If I dont want to hear 900 other people flaming eachother, I can simply leave into my own instance of an area and still be able to talk to my friends. I can also look for new friends inspite of the massive amounts of trading spam and vulgar lingo in towns. The option to PvP is nice every once in a while. I'll do a quick pvp match, not caring who I'm with or against as long as I'm just able to shoot a fireball at someone thats not a bug or plant. All in all, GW is close to the game I've always wanted. Its got a SP basis with option to group with friends and chat with people from around the world. The fighting takes a decent amount of skill and strategy to be effective as well as being customizable. A fantasy world is fine, but I'd prefer a sci fi basis. Also, the ability to freely jump/fly/have a z-axis would improve the game in my option. But until that day comes, I'll be playin GW. After all, they dont charge us per month to play a game like some do. Gotta love that

I like PvP, but I still play mostly PvE. To be honest, since Nightfall release my interest in pvp is very low. Why? Almost the same reasons as most stated in this thread already.

I strictly refuse to play any kind of FotM. If you can't rely on a large guild or a large friendslist, it takes very long to get a group going.
Another reason: PvP simply got worn out for me. The maps, the victoryconditions, have been the same for two years and they always were very limitted. The only diversity, and diversity is my way of having fun, came from the builds. Upon nightfall release the number of viable builds dropped dramatically.

In PvE I can still completely relax after a days work. Log into your account, grab a random hero and do some random things, chat with friends or help them somewhere, play gw in one window and watch tv with your tv-card in another
In the middle of a mission and you feel the urgent need to cook a meal? No problem, Koss&Co won't complain when you take a break for half an hour ^^

The weird thing: still most of my PvE-time is spent on pimping my chars for pvp, getting skills, mods, wepons, armors, in the hope of better days to come

I've flip flopped several times between PvP and PvE. But when I'm in a PvE phase, even if I think to myself "I'm never gonna PvP again," I catch myself doing that too.

I come from a competition-level FPS/quake background, so it's difficult to find equivalent heart-pounding action in GW's PVP arenas. However, I do enjoy GW-PvE many eye-candy item rewards, including uber-rare weapon skins like zodiacs, torment weapons, large armor variety, etc. Add the cooperative element with online friends, and I find myself contantly coming back for more.

I hate to say this, but I actually think the increase is an Unhealthy one for the game...

Most of the influx of players is from those believing this to be a free 2 play MMO

I'd like to know how many start an account and never play again after a few hours into the game as its not what they imagine

I used to do both PvP and PvE on a consistent basis, but lately I haven't done much PvP at all. I'm sick of all the leavers in RA, TA takes too long to get a good team rolling, and HA just plain sucks. GvG is the most fun, but as others have mentioned, takes a long time to set up, only to get rolled because the matching system is absolute garbage, and we end up fighting a team with rating differential greater than 100. It's just frustrating to enjoy a good PvP experience nowadays, so I have stuck mainly to PvE lately.

I PVE only for one reason. BELLENDS.

I got sick of know-alls and kiddies thinking they really are their character telling me how shit I am in Counter-Strike. When I sampled PvP on GW I saw they were there too. "Why use this skill" ... "I pwned you nub" "I've got a small penis and can't get a girlfriend so I play these games and put others down to make me feel like a man" ... OK, I made the last one up but I bet it's not far from the truth for most of them. If people would win graciously then I might try PvP a bit more, but they don't.

In PvE, you get the odd one like this in a PUG but they're mostely few and far between.

Oh,l the nub retards are there in Pve aswell, you've just been lucky

However, there is an easy option to this, turn off Local Chat, and if they are in your team, then leave the team...

The only time I'm ever doing anything that isn't with my guild is in presear (as factions and nightfall have a much quicker learning curve for new players) and in presear its much quicker and easier to find and walk away from the idiots

QFT.

Whenever I hear anything about PvP (other than Fort Aspenwood, which I can enjoy on the odd occaision) it is always, without fail, 12 year old wammos shouting the same kind of abuse.

@ Lonesamurai
@ Vandal2k6

i started early BWE and an PVE only

this is me not for everybody else but i have spent most of my time recently on my permanent presear characters having fun getting a thanks when i answer a question instead of a mass STFU NOOB from all the post sear *experts* in an area.

i give things away to *noobs* and have never accepted a single gold piece for openng the gate or anything else.

new players are more fun, more polite, heck ....i may move there permanently as it is a better neighborhood (my opinion but puts on flamproof to be safe)

Yep your right and I'm happy that mine stays in presear as does each officer from my guild...

Indeed we are.

I love the PvE - I have two accounts with all three chapters on each. 4 Collectors' Editions. 3 PvP unlock packs. Million Game Edition.

I love this game - but I get too stuck in my ways to learn anything! I played nothing but Wammos for the first 6 months or so, and nothing but Ranger since then. I consider myself a beginner - I find one skillbar I like and stick with it.

That said, I don't PvP because I would be embarrassed to show my lack of skill in an open arena. I'm a bit shy that way

Oh, why the PvP unlocks? - Purely for my wonderful heros.

Incentive is one reason I don't PvP.

While some people may not PvP with rewards in mind, I expect that for the amount of time to set up a semi-decent group with even a remote chance of making it very far should get some reward, but most time the first real match is where it ends for PuGs.

I wouldn't leave my guild for anything, it is a PvE based guild and I am very happy with it and the members in it, leaving it to join a PvP based guild is not an option.

I wouldn't mind playing PvP but RA is not worth having to put up with all the BS. HA is too hard to get a group unless you're ranked, that catch 22 is just too much. I do like to AB once in awhile however.

DoA takes me about as long to get a group as HA, however with it I am guarnteed that even if a decent group fails, we will probably get something out of it and more than likely try again.

Voice chat is something I actually love and use it PvE, so that isn't an issue to me.

PvP is just not as accessible or for me as "fun" and I know that fun is subjective to the person's own experience and likes.

As of lately I have begun to PvE more consistantly as well, maybe thats because our guild won 7 matches in a row gvg wise

Although I can understand the scrutany of all PvP aspects in all games, people get cocky/roudy for all the wrong reasons. As much as Anet can have "fun" factors put into the game there is one thing they all cannot moderate. That is the chat that is going on. I have 2 solutions, yet its all theorhetical(spelling?):
- Report them, Anet DOES respond. Give them full screenshots, explanations, and why it was offensive/unnecessary
- Be the VERY first one to type GG(good game), and say GL(good luck) before the match starts. This changes the mood of the match, but yet is actually respectful. If you do these two things and they still harass or make insanely rude comments Anet will step in. Trust me.

I will say this about AB if your side is on a losing streak, take a break from it and try it again. The kurzok side will be a on a win streak eventualy, and or the luxon side it goes back and forth all the time. I know the first time can be frustrating but keep at it and you will get a win sooner or later, its just a matter of time.

I PvE exclusively now. I was involved with a very GvG-centric guild for the first half of my GW experience and I have to say I just didn't get into it as much. After awhile, with all the FotM builds it got to be the same old same old with no real rewards. I'm an instant gratification sort of person. I like to see gold and items drop when I kill things. Now I'm in a small guild consisting of just me and some close IRL friends and we have a blast. We help each other out and just goof around and have fun. With the addition of heros, which has it's cons, but for us it means that the three of us can now do all guild teams for missions and such and not have to worry about scaring up groups that might fail. For us PvE is about the experience and fellowship, which I find is lacking in the PvP aspect of the game. Even the best and most patient guilds will get into a hissy fit over a poor match and there are very few gracious winners.

why do more people play pve instead of pvp?
easier skill level required

Ranked in terms of difficulty:
PVE: Guild Wars on easy mode. Can complete most missions with masters using only 7 Heroes/Henchmans.
PVP Aspenwood: Easy to play if on luxon. Half the team can be afker/leechers and you can still win.
PVP Alliance Battle: Also very very easy. Not a lot of leechers but not a lot of experienced players either. Monks optional. Just pray that your team has a few players that actually know how to cap shrines.
PVP Random Arena: Lot's of leavers if your team is bad. Getting a Gladiator point here usually requires a ZB monk. Three people with good builds will be required, but you might get a free ride from those three. More often then not, you will need to pull your own weight. Name calling and trash talking can often occur. Most people get frustrated here and stop pvping.
Hero Battles: Can be super easy or somewhat hard. Easy: Type /roll 100. Lower roller leaves. Hard: you will need multiple skill unlocks for various professions for your Heroes to be successful.
PVP Team Arena: Gladiator point requires good team with good build and voice chat. No freeloading possible here.
PVP Hero's Ascent: Getting fame points requires you to group with competent players. Discrimination based on skill is a must. Long group formation time, frequent losses and voice chat requirement turns off and stops most casual players.
PVP Guild vs Guild: HA but much harder. You lose rank when you lose games now. Expect no tolerances for failure or newbieness.

HA and GvG depends what level you play at ofc, do you farm the underworld with searing flames, or play GvG randomway at rating 900 and consider it top? hehe
